This booklet highlights the current situation of PhD’s in the arts in
Switzerland: artistic research is consigned to the field of applied sciences, and
therefore to the realm of applied research, yet because Swiss universities of
applied sciences are unable to award doctoral degrees, doctoral candidates
must seek other institutional frameworks in order to promote in the arts. This
has led to the development of several doctoral programs in the arts as
partnerships between universities of applied sciences and Swiss/international
universities.
